It’s my wedding anniversary today.
Five years since we cleared the decks,
Made our pacts
And matched names.
Half a life sentence these days,
And quite possibly the biggest mistake
I ever made.

Still if it’s taught me one thing it’s
That alcohol and proposals
Don’t mix,
So I think I’ll stick to tonic
In my gin from now on.

And, if you’ll allow one further thought,
I’ll climb out of my caring suit
And into my
Fuck you boots
To list the last five years’ worth
Of anniversary gifts she gave:

1st paper
2nd straw
3rd leather
4th books
5th wood.

And I’m thinking,
The perfect ingredients
For a bonfire.

  1. I made such a mistake once (or twice) but I was completely sober. I like the poem's conclusion.
